Frequently Asked Questions
New to Cub Scouting or to Pack 242? Here are answers to the questions we hear most often. Don't see yours? Email us at pack242cvc@gmail.com.
Who can join Pack 242?
We welcome all boys and girls in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Scouts are placed in a den with others in the same grade.
When and where do you meet?
Our meetings are held every Monday at 6:30 PM throughout the school year at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 45 Main St, Newport News, in Hilton Village. Most meetings are den meetings, where scouts meet with a "den" of kids their age. We typically have pack meetings, with all the scouts together to acknowledge their advancements, once a month. Outings, campouts and special events are listed on our pack calendar.
How much does it cost?
Every scout must be registered online by their parent/guardian. During the registration process, the annual national and council dues are collected, which typically come to $160. This covers liability insurance and supports activities throughout the year. In addition, our pack collects $40 per year dues to make all the pack activities, such as campouts and special events, free for the year. Cost should never keep a child out of Scouting, so ask us about financial help if you need it. The cost can also be reduced through participating in our fundraising efforts!
How do I sign up?
You can register online at Pack 242 on BeAScout.org. You're also welcome to visit a Monday meeting first to see what we're about.
Does your pack have campouts?
Yes! Our pack organizies two-night campouts in both the spring and fall. We camp as families, so scouts need an adult partner. Developing a love of the outdoors is a crucial part of the Cub Scout experience. If you can't camp with us, scouts can participate for the day and come to our Saturday night campfire pack meeting.
What are the dens and ranks?
Each grade has its own rank:
- Kindergarten: Lion
- 1st grade: Tiger
- 2nd grade: Wolf
- 3rd grade: Bear
- 4th grade: Webelos
- 5th grade: Arrow of Light
Do parents need to attend meetings?
Cub Scouts is a family-oriented program, so we want you to engage and enjoy your kids! Lions and Tigers den meetings require an adult partner at every meeting. For older dens, parents are welcome to stay, and we rely on volunteers to lead dens and help with pack events.
Does my Scout need a uniform?
Scouts wear the Cub Scout uniform to monthly pack meetings and ceremonies. New families don't need one right away, so come as you are to your first few meetings and ask us about where to get uniform pieces.
What paperwork is needed for campouts and outings?
Some activities require a current Annual Health and Medical Record. Scout Medical Forms are available here.
Can my Scout join partway through the year?
Yes! Scouts can join at any time during the year. We'll help them catch up with their den.
